Natura 2000
GOUFFRE DE LA FAGE
gouffre de la fage

In response to the continued degradation of natural habitats and to the threat of extinction hanging over many wild species, the European Communities Council adopted, on May 21, 1992, the "Habitats" directive.

his directive requires member states to provide a list of remarkable sites, identifiable as such according to the criteria defined in the text, in order to establish a coherent European ecological network: the "NATURA 2000" network.

The primary purpose of the directive is to promote the maintenance of biodiversity, to conserve habitats, fauna and flora, while taking account the economical, social, cultural and regional requirements. It contributes to the goal of a sustainable development.

The French state has chosen to accompany the official designation act of a site in Special Areas of Conservation with an objective document: such a document,

containing an inventory of biological resources and conservation measures to be undertaken, was prepared for the site of GOUFFRE DE LA FAGE, by the GROUPE MAMMOLOGIQUE ET HERPETOLOGIQUE (MAMMALS AND HERPETOLOGY GROUP) of the LIMOUSIN (e.mail : gmhl@wanadoo.fr).

The originality of the GOUFFRE DE LA FAGE lies in its rich population of bats.
Among the 33 species present in France, 14 hibernate in LA FAGE, including 10 very regularly. The exceptional character of this cave is also the number of inviduals: about 14,000 individuals on average find refuge each winter, all species confounded.
In addition, the pit of LA FAGE is not only a hibernation site but also a parturition site of first importance: 4 species of high asset value breed there, and form colonies of several thousands of individuals.
For all these reasons, LA FAGE is one of the most remarkable sites in Europe for bats and was proposed to integrate the Natura 2000 European network.

Ours Buts

The Bent-Winged Bat is the species of bats that is the most gregarious in Europe: it forms in caves colonies with often several thousands of individuals. There are 10,000 in La Fage, where they hibernate (November to March) and reproduce (May to August).
At dusk they emerge from the pit to disperse within a radius of several tens of kilometers, to hunt small dipterans and butterflies that make up their diet. The sonar signals they use to track their prey are too high (50 kHz) to be heard by humans (our ear does not hear sounds above 20 kHz). But by slowing them down by 10 times, through a device, we can hear them and study them.

  The Grand Murine
is one of the largest species in France; yet it weighs only 30 g! But with its 40 cm, it is an excellent flyer able to fly at 40 km over several kms.
Its diet consists almost exclusively of insects caught on the ground

(Ground Beetles, Crickets, Mole Crickets...), as much in the prairie as in the forest. It identifies its prey by listening to the sound of their movement on the ground, and uses its sonar especially to direct itself.
During Spring it reproduces itself in La Fage alongside the Bent-Winged Bat, forming mixed swarms while taking advantage of their mutual warmth.
In winter some 200 individuals disperse in the cave to hibernate.

The Small Rhinolophe is one of the smallest species in France, with its 5g for 20 cm wide.
When it is lethargic it suspends itself to the ceiling or walls of its hibernating site, covering itself with its wings, similarly to a small black cocoon.
This species that is very fragile to the destruction of its habitats (hardwood forests, hedges, etc. ...) hibernates in La Fage but does not reproduce there.

During summer it hunts mosquitoes and butterflies through its very particular sonar: its signals are much longer and more acute than those of other species, and remain on the same frequency; you can hear them without having to slow them down through the Heterodyne system of the ultrasound detectors.

What's the best time to see me?
Right when the pit opens, in April, when I just start to get out of my hibernation.
